The Brief

The Brief

The London Borough of Camden wanted to be one of the first Councils in the UK to offer fully integrated online payment services to the residents and businesses in the Borough. Rather than develop a specific system which only accommodated specific types of payment, Camden wanted a system which would allow flexible integration with a variety of types of payment in the future. It was important that for the most popular types of payment, such as Council Tax and Business Rates, that users were able to validate their account details and view their current balance prior to making a payment. Due to the level of integration with the Camden back office systems it was essential that the system infrastructure was secure and their was no risk of internal systems being compromised. We worked with Datacash to provide realtime authorisation and processing of the transactions, which once approved, allowed us to update Camden's back office accounting systems.

What we did

What we did

Working with the London Borough of Camden to architect the new solution we then developed an online payments web application. The new web application allowed the personal details of customers’ accounts to be accessed securely by them online. Customers were able to make payments securely for a variety of Council services online. A version of this system built by us still ensures payments are processed securely in real-time with the results of the transaction being reported back to the user. Successful transactions are then communicated securely to the Council, so they can be processed and fulfilled by the internal systems.

The original payment system went live in 2000 and additional services have been added since then. Although various security updates have been carried out to the system over the years, the fundamental architecture of the solution which we designed and built in the late 1990's has remained in place and continues to provide the level of service required by the council and their customers.

We continue to host and support the online payments solution for the Council.

About the London Borough of Camden

About the London Borough of Camden

In April 1965, the London Borough of Camden replaced the former metropolitan boroughs of Hampstead, Holborn, and St Pancras. It was named after the first Earl Camden, Charles Pratt, who started the development of Camden Town in 1791.

Our history with the London Borough of Camden

Our history with the London Borough of Camden

We started working with The London Borough of Camden in the late 1990's. Initially we were appointed to redevelop their mainly static HTML web site and to introduce 'self publishing', dynamically generated, areas of content. At that time Content Management Systems (CMS) had not been invented and our self publishing areas provided Camden with the ability to quickly and easily update specific types of content as required. The development of the online payment system was launched in 2000 and shortly afterwards we added the ability for users to set up Direct Debit payments, with real time verification.

We have successfully completed many projects for Camden over the last 20 years. More recently we redeveloped the online Commercial Property Database which allows users to search and find properties which are available to rent in the Borough.
